Appearance:
Kane is young for a Jedi Master, and that shows in his appearance. He is well-muscled - not overweight nor underweight - making him both a tough opponent and a helpful ally. His hair is kept in a neat, short fashion, being wavy and a dark brown color. His eyes are a shade of rich brown, sparkling with superior intellect, which is not common in a young human. Kane wears the robes of a Jedi Master, and is hardly ever seen wearing anything else.
Personality:
In his early life, Kane was a very outgoing, warm-hearted, open-minded person, often saying the first thing that came to his mind without considering the consequences. He was often reckless, relying too much on a more aggressive style of fighting, using hate and anger to fuel him when fighting other students.
During his apprenticeship to the Jedi Knight Jin, Kane became more attuned to the Force, relying less on aggressive behavior and more on calm serenity. He quit relying on the lightsaber form Ataru, and took up a much more defensive form called Soresu, a symbol of his change in personality. Kane also became less talkative, learning from his Master that it was often best not to speak at all; it was only necessary to speak when there was something to be said.
When he took Alem Maris as his Padawan, Kane became more mature, leaving behind his youth at an early age to be a mentor to the young boy. He became even less secluded, tending to keep to himself most of the time. His behavior angered Alem, who didn't quite understand his Master's lack of excitement and hidden affections.
History:
Early Life
Kane Ryder was born thirty years ago on the planet of Alderaan, raised by his adoptive parents - two middle-class folk who refused to tell him of his true lineage, whatever their reasons may be. Even though he had never met his mother, Kane's “parents” told him everything about her – how kind and caring she was, what she looked like, how she acted, and why she left her baby son. They didn't tell the young boy his mother's name, however.
Due to a strange circumstance, his mother had left him in the care of two family friends. Of course, they had immediately agreed to take the boy under their wing, and he was received by warm, open arms. The identity of Kane's father was unknown to even his adoptive parents – his mother had never told them the reasoning behind her pregnancy. Some things were better left unsaid. He kept his true family name, however - Ryder. At least they told him that much.
Kane was isolated most of his life, preferring to play by himself than with his peers. He was different than they were. He had special powers, making him seem "weird". In his early childhood, he did befriend a few other social outcasts – a young, freakishly shy boy named Koel, and an older, tomboyish girl called Trista. Together, the three made the perfect trio, and Kane learned a lot about friendship in the year or so that he knew the two. They, like all of the other children, often went on imaginary adventures together. Kane was always the Jedi, of course. The brave defender of the galaxy.
Kane was identified at the age of six. His presence hadn't been kept from the Jedi for very long. Because of his obvious strength in the Force, a scout was immediately sent to locate the boy and bring him to the temple. At first, Kane didn't take to his new responsibilities with much enthusiasm. He didn't want to leave his family and friends, the only people who had ever even cared about him, behind. It would break his heart to see them go. But once we finally accepted his destiny, excitement ensued.
The young boy quickly took to his studies at the temple. He was finally where he belonged. His adoptive parents did send him letters or holos every once in a while, and that kept him going. Kane was far more impressive to the Masters than any of the others younglings. He was extremely talented, mastering the first lightsaber form years before the others. And he wasn't an average joe when it came to the Force, either.
Temple Life
Kane didn't wasn't attached to many students at the Jedi Temple. None of them quite understood the shy, talented young boy. At first, his only “friends” were the Jedi Masters. A year passed without any luck finding a companion, and then Lahna came along. She was a year younger than Kane, having been sent to train as a youngling from her home on the outskirts of Coruscant. Although they were complete opposites – Kane was incredibly quiet and kept to himself, and Lahna was outspoken and often annoying – they bonded quickly. Neither of them attracted many friends.
When Kane had finished with his studies each day, he would visit his friend Lahna in her room at the temple. They would discuss meaningless things, usually, opening up to each other. It was the first person Kane had ever felt comfortable telling his secrets to.
Only a few months after meeting Lahna, Kane also befriended two boys – Enik and Khalon Voss, two brothers. The four of them – Kane, Lahna, Enik, and Khalon – spent all of their time together. Once a week they would leave the temple, heading to a series of secret caves outside of the building. They thought themselves special; they were the only ones who knew of the cave's existence. There they would play all day long, mostly imaginary war games. Lahna, amongst all the boys, somehow managed to fit in.
At age 12, Kane participated in a tournament to win the admiration of a master, like several younglings do. He did well in this tournament, and he even claimed the title of "winner", winning the respect of a Jedi Knight named Kel-Tah. The young Knight immediately took up Kane as his pupil, even though the Jedi Masters believed him not ready to teach another.
Early Apprenticeship
During his apprenticeship to Kel-Tah, Kane spent most of his time away from his impatient Master, preferring to study and play alongside his good friends – Lahna, Enik, and Khalon. On one not so special day, Kane and Enik were training in the sparring room together when a group of boys, led by an older boy called Jeb, entered the room. Now, Kane had never had a problem with Jeb, but he and Enik had always had a rivalry.
Enik, being the smart-mouthed young boy that he was, managed a rather nasty insult, and Jeb retorted by making fun of Enik's younger brother Khalon. This angered the younger boy, who had always looked after his weaker brother, and he got into a fight with Jeb; however, Jeb easily over-powered him and set about punching Enik repeatedly. Kane immediately thought to aide his friend, and he stepped into the fight, pushing Jeb off of the poor Enik and defeating him in a fist fight.
Finally, a Jedi Master showed up and took the three boys in for questioning. Jeb was set free – he had told the Jedi Master in charge of discipline that Enik and Kane had started the fight, which, in some respects, was true. Being the good friend that he had always been, Kane told the Master that he had started the fight, even though he had not. By admitting this, he saved his best friend from punishment. It was a selfless act, and one that Kane would always remember.
But when play-time was over, Kane would return to his training with his Jedi Master, whom he didn't necessarily share a very strong bond with, and who he doubted even liked him. It was a painful relationship; Kane didn't learn as much as he would have liked from Kel-Tah.
After a year of training alongside the often rash and impatient Kel-Tah, the two were sent on their first mission together. Of course, Kane did well on the mission, earning the respect of both his newfound Master and the High Council Members themselves. Kane had proven to them that he could succeed even in the most difficult of situations.
A New Master
Four years into Kane's training, it was decided that the young man would be assigned to a different Master. The council believe Kel-Tah incapable of teaching him any further, for they feared him too unpredictable, easily swayed by the Dark Side of the Force. Kane may be drawn to this as well if the two stayed together. So, when Kane was seventeen years of age, he was chosen by the Jedi Knight Jin Starr, a stronger servant of the light. Jin had felt drawn to Kane, as he would often tell the young man during their time together.
Although Kane was upset because of his old Master's leaving, he adapted to the change well enough. Perhaps it was because his bond with Kel-Tah had never been an incredibly strong one, and he took an immediate liking to Jin Starr.
Jedi Training
Kane progressed quickly through his studies with his new master, picking up on lightsaber forms other than Shii-Cho, which he had already nearly mastered. He spent most of his time practicing more aggressive forms like Ataru, and outside of his training sessions he sparred alone, also honing his Force Powers. Kane was a true prodigy; not anyone near the skill of the late Skywalker line, but he was talented, and his importance in the role of the Jedi was foretold by the masters of the order, all of whom kept a very close eye on the boy as he grew older.
His master knew of Kane's weaknesses and sought to exploit them, teaching him patience and other methods of fighting that weren't fueled only by hate and aggression. He taught the boy to rely wholly on the Force, letting it guide him, striking out at his enemies only for justice. Kane didn't grasp these concepts quickly.
With years of training, Kane steadily turned from his aggressive ways, spending less time on strong, heavy styles of fighting. He mastered Shii-Cho at an earlier age than most because of his talent in that area. Although he wasn't a Force expert, he did acknowledge the Force to win his duels. Due to his Master's guidance, Kane became a completely different person. He became calmer, quieter, more secluded, and found it easier to sit in silence and meditate than take out his anger on others. This only led him closer to the Force.
The First Mission
Kane and Master Jin were sent on their first mission together when Kane was 18 years of age. Two Jedi teams would be required for the dangerous assignment. Kane and Jin were chosen to accompany Lahna, Kane's old friend, and her Master Anna Eclipse to Kashyyk. Their duty was to go to the Wookiee planet and retrieve a stolen hologram from the library on Coruscant, discover who the thief was, and bring the hologram back safely to the library.
The four left immediately, flying to Kashyyk and immediately set about asking around town for the hologram. They soon discovered that a Force-sensitive had landed on Kashyyk from a local, and that the suspicious man had headed to the center of town somewhere. The Jedi tracked him down, catching the man in the street. The encounter quickly became an aggressive one when the man pulled out a lightsaber on the two.
Kane, Jin, Anna, and Lahna easily won the fight, disarming the man and bringing him to Coruscant for questioning. The hologram was returned unscathed.
The Second Mission
Jin and Kane, after more extensive training, were finally sent on their next mission a few months after their first. They would fly to Tatooine, to Mos Eisley, to settle a dispute between a couple of gangs. The fighting between them had become an all out gang fight, escalating to the division of Mos Eisley's people. The city had split into two sections - North Mos Eisley and South Mos Eisley. Kane and Jin's job was to bring peace between the two gangs without bloodshed. It was more difficult than it sounded.
Upon arriving on Mos Eisley, the two Jedi immediately ran into trouble when they discovered one of the gangs despised Jedi and wanted them dead. Due to Kane's cleverly thought up plan, the Master and Apprentice snuck into the gang's territory, forcing them to sign a contract that called for peace between the two gangs, and also the rejoining of North Mos Eisley and South Mos Eisley. Because of their bold act, the Jedi gained the respect of the tough gang - they had succeeded.
Because of his success on the mission, the Master gained respect for the young Kane Ryder, for it hadn't been his Master's idea, but his own.
Rise of a True Jedi
When Kane was 19 years of age, he and his Master were sent on a mission to a small planet in the Outer Rim, a planet unknown to most. The Jedi Council had discovered that a group of Dark Jedi had been traveling to and from the planet, and their activity was becoming increasingly suspicious. The two Jedi were sent to find out why the Dark Jedi were traveling to the planet.
Kane and Jin spent quite some time on the planet. They befriended a young local boy named Alem, who helped them locate the enemy, who had been hiding out in one of the planet's caves.
When the two caught up to the Dark Jedi, they fought. Thinking that the two were only low-ranking Force-users, Kane and Jin underestimated them. Kane quickly dealt a fatal blow to the weaker one, and then the Padawan joined his Master in dueling the remaining Dark Jedi, a dual-wielding Jar'Kai expert. The Master and Apprentice worked well together. Jin used the most defensive of the lightsaber forms, blocking each of their enemy's blows, and Kane used the most offensive form, Ataru, to strike out at their opponent; however, Jin lowered his defenses for only a moment, and the Dark Jedi managed to stab him in the rib cage.
Enraged, Kane dueled the dual-wielder alone, disarming her and removing her arm in one clean stroke. When his lightsaber was held to the woman's throat, the Jedi Padawan did not give in to his anger. Instead, he let you go, deciding it more important to get his Master to safety. After the battle, Kane carried his Master back into town, quickly locating the local boy, Alem.
The boy's grandfather, and his only living relative, helped care for the two Jedi, but it was obvious that Jin could not be saved. During his last few hours of life, Jin spoke with both Kane, making it known that the young man was ready to become a Jedi Knight. Kane also decided that he would give up on the Ataru lightsaber form, deciding to train in the art of a more defensive one instead - Soresu. Distraught and depressed due to his Master's death, Kane took Alem with him to Coruscant to be accepted into the order.
Passing on the Ways of the Force
Soon after Kane and Alem's arrival on Coruscant, Alem was appointed Kane's Padawan Learner. The boy was much like Kane had once been - hard-headed, rash, determined, full of energy . . . He even had some of the same flaws. But soon, Kane found that the two were quite different in some aspects. Alem gave up too easily when it came to practicing lightsaber techniques, something Kane would have never done. He relied more on his knowledge of the Force, which was immense for his age. Kane was hard on the boy because of this, pushing him to work on his forms and techniques, not focusing on the more important aspects of being a Jedi.
Because of this, Alem often went against his master's orders, spending his free time manipulating his school books instead of practicing what Kane had told him to work on. Sometimes the boy doubted his master even liked him; he wasn't worthy, he wasn't like him at all. But that wasn't the case at all. The conflict between the two only strengthened their bond.
Alem's First Mission
As Kane was meditating in his room one evening, an old friend knocked on his door. Lahna, whom Kane hadn't seen in over a year, spoke with him for some time, telling her fellow Jedi Knight that he and Alem were to be sent on a mission with Lahna and her Padawan, Kayda, to one of the Core Planets. One of the Senators of this planet had been assassinated, and the Jedi Council believed the assassin to be a Dark Jedi. If the Dark Jedi were involved, the Jedi would be there to maintain peace and vanquish the foe. Of course, Kane agreed to go along with Lahna.
Once on the planet, the four Jedi went about searching for the Dark Jedi's hiding place, and they soon discovered it – an abandoned warehouse. Working together, Kane, Lahna, Alem, and Kayda managed to catch the Dark Jedi in action, as they were plotting an attempt on another Senator's life.
Having been seen, the Dark Jedi attacked, and the four Jedi fought against their two foes. Kane and Lahna made sure to keep their Padawans safe from harm; they were still very young an experienced. Together, Kane and Lahna finished off the two, bringing news back to the capital of the planet that the assassins had been taking care of. The Jedi Council believes this may have been the work of Dark Lord Judicar.
Overcoming the Darkness
One grim day, Kane's childhood friend Enik came to him, telling the young Knight that he and his brother Khalon were being sent on a secret mission to the planet of Corellia. The young man wouldn't tell Kane why he was being sent to Corellia – it was top secret, supposedly. Kane was sad to see his friend leave, but he didn't pester the man about it any more than he had to. Enik left soon after he had informed Kane of his departure. Kane didn't hear from the young man for several weeks, until he finally returned, utterly broken and in despair. His younger brother Khalon had been killed during the mission.
Enik delved into a dark time of depression, hardly ever speaking to anyone. Not even his best friends. Kane feared for his friend's well-being, but he could do nothing about it. Because of his concern for his friend, Kane also entered a brief time of sadness. His old friend Lahna abandoned her duties to care for the distraught Jedi Knight, helping him through the tough times. During one of their more intense conversations, the two even formed a love-like relationship.
Unknown to Kane, Enik had another run in with the young Jedi Knight called Jeb. Once again, Enik threw an insult at him, and Jeb set about making fun of Enik. Enik, as he had before, attacked Jeb, this time giving in to his anger and killing the man. Knowing that he would never be forgiven for his actions, Enik allowed himself to travel down the dark path. He left a note for Kane to read before leaving the temple.
But Kane knew where to find his old friend. He went after him, and Lahna forced him to allow her to come along. Together, they went to the series of caves outside of the Jedi Temple, where they used to play as children. Enik was there, saying his last goodbyes to his old life. Angry at having been followed, and fully submersed in the dark side, Khalon attacked his old friend. In self-defense, Kane dueled him, but he did not wish to harm him. Lahna fought by his side.
Enik had become a better swordsman since the last time they had sparred. He managed to break through Lahna's defenses, stabbing her. Instantly, Kane gave up the fight to go to Lahna's side. Enik allowed his previous friend to live and fled the caves. Kane never saw him again.
Having been fatally wounded by Enik's blade, Lahna died in Kane's arms, whispering words of love to him in her last breaths. Although he did not allow that final confrontation to lead him down the dark path, Kane never really got over the loss of his two friends. He would forever remember them.
Becoming a Master
Kane was asked to join the High Council and become a Jedi Master when the young man was only 29 years old, something that rarely occurred. He was one of the youngest to become a Master, most likely due to his obvious attunement to the Force and swordsmanship skills. The Masters trusted in his abilities as a Jedi, knowing that the young man would never fall to the temptations of the Dark Side of the Force.
Although he had reached his goal in life, Kane set new goals for himself, strengthening his lightsaber forms and Force powers. He quickly became known as one of the most renowned sword fighters in the galaxy, having mastered the art of Soresu, a defensive lightsaber form, and being very skilled in the aggressive forms Ataru and Djem So.
Taking Another Apprentice
One year after Kane became a Jedi Master and Alem moved on to become a Jedi Knight, Kane felt drawn to attend a tournament amongst Padawans. There he watched as a youngling called Carth proved himself on the battlefield. Feeling a strong bond between them, Kane chose Carth as his next Apprentice.
They immediately formed a strong connection. Carth was well-attuned to the Force. And though he relied more on Force Powers than his lightsaber, Kane respected the boy. He taught him the basics of Shii-Cho, Ataru, and Soresu, the lightsaber forms that he himself had always excelled in, as well as a few other techniques necessary to a Jedi.
Carth was different from Alem in almost every way. Kane and Alem had never been anything alike, but Carth seemed to reflect more of Kane's childhood than the Jedi Master would like. The boy reminded him of himself. Whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, he still did not know.
Breaking Apart from the Republic and the True Sith
Kane had always been a strong supporter in the Senate; he had trusted in their decisions, relying on them. But when the Dark Jedi began to sway the Chancellor to their side, Kane became enraged. He was part of the Jedi Strike Team that was sent to assassinate the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Judicar, during his meeting with the Chancellor.
Because of Kane's failure, the Jedi were separated from the Republic. They would no longer be the Protectors of the galaxy. This only angered the young Master further. He often went on missions in the Outer Rim, missions that led to blood-shed between the Jedi and the Dark Jedi – skirmishes that were unknown to the Republic. The Jedi Council was furious because of Kane's inability to remain calm during the situation, and they often berated him for his rational actions. But Kane had promised himself to defeat the Dark Jedi, no matter what the costs, and the Council couldn't stop him.
When word reached the Jedi Council that the True Sith did exist, Kane acted quickly, sending scouts to the far reaches of the galaxy to seek them out; however, he was unable to locate them. If the Master who had discovered them spoke the truth, then they had been hiding out in the darkest corners of the galaxy for years without notice.
Were the True Sith ally or foe? Who were they? Kane didn't know the answers to these questions, but he would soon find out.
There is no death, there is the Force.
